Challenge:
Downtown West Seattle is an area undergoing a tremendous amount of change and growth. With the amount of construction activity in the neighborhood, community activists were wary of developers new to West Seattle. The submarket did not have any new market-rate apartment buildings, and with the downturn in the economy, retail leasing success was difficult to predict.
Solution:
Harbor arrived in West Seattle and prior to announcing any plans, and engaged the community through the Chamber of Commerce and the Junction Association in an honest, upfront manner. The team joined both groups, volunteered for committees and became an active participant in the community. Harbor selected the name Mural to honor the many historical murals found throughout Downtown West Seattle. A West Seattle artist, Kelly Rae Cunningham was hired to create a 12 foot x 10 foot mural for the development, entitled fantango.
Results:
Mural is a highly anticipated project in West Seattle, embraced by the community and business leaders. Harbor was able to quickly lease the retail space in a challenging economic environment, where retail vacancies are climbing. Authentic, locally owned retailers include: Fresh Bistro by Herban Feast, Wallflower (a custom framing and art gallery) and Seasons Hair Salon.
