Art is a part of the urban experience. It creates a feeling, a sense of place. We believe that local, original artwork enriches the lifestyle of our residents as well as the sidewalk experience of our neighbors.

A few unique art stories from our developments:

Alcyone — South Lake Union has a long history of community art. Mosaics speaking to the area’s history dot the neighborhood’s sidewalks. Artists and cultural organizations work alongside new biotech buildings, offices and residences. Alcyone, the neighborhood’s first market rate apartment building embraces this tradition of public art. The alleyway, which often houses the dumpsters and recycling bins of an apartment building, is a celebrated place at Alcyone. The story of the community’s name is told through a series of metalwork panels, creating both an art form and a garage enclosure. A wiry metal dog greets four-legged guests at the resident corner pub, Paddy Coyne’s. He stands watch over a water bowl — day and night. And, just a few steps from this watchdog, pedestrians discover another art form, imbedded in the sidewalk, and marking the geographic center of the city.

Landes — As with all of Harbor’s projects, Landes includes public art. The north side of the building includes circular art that is an artistic representation of the “circle of life.” Unlike in the Lion King, the “circle of life” at Landes refers to the idea of living, working and playing in one community: Living connected to your neighbors, technology, the environment and the downtown core. The lobby art series was crafted by a local artist, Lloyd Blakely. As with the external art, these pieces speak to the environment of the building. Featuring landscapes from a new angle — a hillside/top-down view — they reflect the unusual perspective that First Hill residents call their own as they look down at the city below them.
